Jack's Tattoo

Jack's tattoo is seen quite a bit in this week's episode and it has got me thinking about the significance of it, if there is one. Here is a picture of his tattoo. Would anyone like to take a stab at the translation of the characters? They could be Chinese, Japanese or even Korean (perhaps Sun and Jin can translate this for us, wonder if there is a connection there).

Here are some interesting facts about the tattoo:

  1. There are Asian characters across the bottom that must translate into something.
  2. The number 5 is displayed in the middle. There is more to read on the number 5 and Jack's tattoo in my posting about the playing cards.
  3. The characters to the right of the tattoo almost look like the letters B and C, but could very well be something else.
  4. As seen in the images below, Jack did not have the tattoo before he got married or while he was married. The first image is from just before he was married, the second from when him and Sarah first started to split apart.
  5. The tattoo is not always visible. In fact, from what I can tell it is rarely visible and seems to only be visible when something significant is happening. I have searched some screen captures from quite a few past episodes of Lost and here is what I found so far (there may be more):
  • Episode #1 - when the plane crashed.
  • When Boone died.
  • When the hatch was opened.
  • When the lockdown of the hatch occurred.

I've done some research and the characters are Chinese. Apparently Chinese characters have appeared all over the show. Check this out:
